More on George Allen, if you can take it 9/04/2006 10:27:00 PM | Justin More on George Allen, if you can take it I'm afraid they might start calling us the freegeorgeallen blog if we take this much further, but here's a letter from him to Condi Rice demanding they revoke former Iranian president Khatami's visa and prevent him from speaking in the US. A bunch of Israeli pressure groups have been bearing down on the state department in indignation that Khatami would be granted a visa while we're nearly at war with Iran. My response is twofold: 1) Khatami is the most moderate, pro-western leader Iran has had since the 79 revolution, so it's stupid to try to isolate him when he's pretty much the only mainstream leadership left that is remotely in sync with our vision of what we want Iran to be. 2) I find the entire idea of denying visas to "speakers" morally repugnant, and contrary to the spirit of the first amendment. If neo-nazis can march and express their opinions, then it's absurd to try to stop this moderate iranian former president from doing so. Of course, he's not a US citizen, so the circumstances aren't legally comparable. But still, if you view the first amendment as a universal value, then it really should apply to everyone, including foreigners. perma link |
