&*#@ Subways During the GOP Convention
Mickey Kaus asks: "Did they really shut down the N.Y. subways during the GOP convention, as Kerry claimed? I think I took the subway during the GOP convention."
I don't know if that is what Kerry is referring to, but I can attest that certain parts of the subway system were definitely shut down for a period of time during the GOP convention. Thursday night of the GOP convention, I took the E line in from Queens. When I tried to switch at lex to the 4, 5, and 6, a cop was at platform. It was announced over the speaker that the line was not running local now, and we'd have a take a circuitous route (to timesquare, then the shuttle to grand central station, then the express uptown). People in the station were not sure, but thought there was a presidential motorcade or GOP delegate bus or something like that above ground. Worse, I tried to exit the subway station, cops would not let me out of the station! I waited for about 20 minutes, and many were waiting longer, before the line started running again.
