Saturday, December 11, 2004 Did The Bush Administration manufacture the case for WMD in Pyongyang too?
This piece in Foreign Affairs suggests The Bush Administration's case for Pyongyang having a program to enrich weapons grade uranium was not based on any hard evidence. It proposes that the the administration may have forwarded it primarily to scuttle any chance of a real peace developing on the Peninsula. Granted, the piece does not deny that North Korea technically violated the 1994 framework by enriching non-weapons grade uranium, but did this really justify cutting off talks with them and effectively encouraging them to resume the production of plutonium-based weapons? Sometimes it's surprising how lacking in pragmatism they are considering the number of businessmen and neo-cons that dominate the administration.
