Krugman and One-Letter Politics 10/16/2006 12:20:00 PM | Jared Alessandroni Krugman - you'll only get this if you're Times Select or read the paper - writes today about the importance to both parties of which party wins the election. Most importantly, he writes, The really important reason may be summed up in two words: subpoena power. He points out that there are sympathetic Republicans - mavericks like McCain, who some Democrats might consider voting for. But McCain's compromise, while much touted, let the "President" define torture on his own terms. What about Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island, endorsed by the Sierra Club? As others have pointed out, Republicans are absolutists, and while Democrats actually consider each question on its merits, Republicans are seldom intelligent or brave enough to do so. If Chafee wants to personally save every owl, great, but has he even once stood up against Cheney's back-room dealings with energy companies? Has he even once questioned Bush's policy of supporting technology that doesn't exist to solve our energy needs, rather than supporting promising technology that actually works? But all that being said, as Krugman so clearly frames it, it's about subpoena power, and if we take even one chamber, it's worth it. Don't just vote - make sure all your friends do, too. perma link |
